The Best Window Cleaner

n22081

By Annie B. Bond,
executive producer of Care2's Green Living

A little dab of this and that from your kitchen cupboard
will provide you with the best window cleaner!

SIMPLE SOLUTION:  Around Earth Day 1990, every newspaper in the country (or so it seemed) offered recipes for non-toxic cleaning with the basics we all have in our kitchen cupboards, and the recipe for windows was invariably just plain vinegar and water with the option of drying the windows with old newspapers.

People by the thousands tried this and swore off cleaning with homemade recipes for good because the formula left streaks on their windows.

Unfortunately, the commercial products they had used for so many years had left a wax buildup and vinegar alone wouldn't do the job of removing the residue. Adding dab of dish soap to the vinegar and water would have removed the buildup.

THE BEST WINDOW CLEANER
Make a great all-purpose window cleaner by combining 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap or detergent, and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Combine in a spray bottle. Shake to blend.

How can I remove red soil from white school socks?

Rub a little dishwashing detergent on the stain
before putting it in the wash.

How can I remove food dye from my woollen carpet?

Rub some vinegar on the stain and aim an ultra-violet light on it.

How can you remove shoe polish from socks?

Wipe them with mentholated spirits before you throw them in the wash to lift the stain.

How can I remove make-up from blue and black shirt collars?

Rub with some dishwashing liquid to soften the stain.

How can I remove pumpkin from my carpet?

Wipe it with a little vinegar and aim an ultra-violet light at it.

How can I remove blue pen from jeans?

It depends on the pen. If it is a biro or a felt tip pen use a bit of white spirit. If it is a gel pen with a paint base use some mentholated spirits.

How can I remove blue play dough from carpet?

Just soap and water will get that up. Aim an ultra-violate light on it and the stain will lift.

How can I remove nail polish from my clothes, upholstery, and carpet?

Get some pure acetone and rub it in circular motions on the stain. Don't use nail polish remover as it is no longer pure acetone.

How can I remove mildew stains from a cardigan?

Fill a bucket with salt water and leave the garment in it over night. Don't rinse it and hang it out in the sunshine. A salt crust will form. Put in the washing machine and the mildew will lift.
