'Drinking mates ... when home' are the network of close friends
that can be called on to help when you ar not around and
they can help create a sense of normality and fill in the gaps when you are back home.

The BBQ, talking football, swearing about politics, loaning tools and borrowing lawn mowers
plus sharing a drink at the local club
are some of the ways that blokes try to break down the barriers and network with others.
The stereo-typical conversations are rough, filled with four letter words to create feeling
and don't usually stretch the grey power.
They are bonding sessions by the pack!
Jokes are simple ... and most times funny
and not always appreciated by the other half.
Example of the 'rough' humour ...
Sadly, research indicates that drinking too
much causes problems, no matter how
much money you make or how qualified.
Here is a story about a barrister who has
brain damage from drinking too much.

Suggested ways of working with it:
|
|
Moving forward alone or in groups
|
To get a 'drinking mates group' started,
you might have to suggest catching up
with old school friends, or past work associates.
Accept the situation with agreed drink
time, number, strength & dollar limits.
Encourage that it might be at a nearby hotel
or licenced club ... a cheap taxi ride home.
The 'heavy drinking' passion is also silly for both young and old. It screws up memory
and learning ... not to mention blackouts ...
which does not help in personal safety
and getting ahead in any career.
Get to know who the mates are.
Maybe after some time, network with the mates'
partners so a social support and
drink moderation circle is created.
Some final ideas .. swap that beer,
shooter or wine for a lemon, lime & bitters ...
what have you got to lose?
And when home ... make a point of
going to your kids' sports days, concerts
and the Parents & Friends meetings.
