| Saying goodbye to your Dad can be difficult for a child. |
"Will Dad come back?" "Why does he have to go away?" "How long will he be away?" |
| Things you can try! | Make a special time for the children before you go away. Help them to feel important. Do something that they enjoy .. and will remember ... like for the littlies, reading them a special book, or for those a bit older, making sure that their bike is OK or their room gets repainted ... well, start by picking (negotiating) the paint colours! Include them in something that will help them get through the few weeks that you are away, like starting a project together that could be finished when your back. When you come home, take an interest in them and what they have done while you have been away. |

While
Dad is away; child behaviour may be difficult to handle. At this time it's important to keep the rules and boundaries, as this provides security. Sometimes "time out" for the child is helpful. Letting them help with getting dinner can be good relationship building. When Dad returns home child behaviour may change yet again. It is Important to keep the rules and boundaries, and things will get back to normal! |
