Changing light globes

emergency   Changing light globes
  Back

There are 2 light globe types:

Make sure
that the globe is cool
before trying
to change.

BA - Bayonet base ('classic' in Australia)
ES - Edison screw base (common in USA)

Turn OFF the electricity.
Switches are usually pushed UP to turn off
in Australia but with interconnect switches,
this cannot be relied on.

Bayonet base

Bayonet (BA) Base Globe Removal

1 - push in a small distance
2 - rotate anti-clockwise
3 - lift out

To put in a new globe,
push in gently and rotate clockwise.
When the globe 'drops in'
push in and rotate clockwise a small way
until it will no longer rotate.

WARNING:
Corroded bases are sometimes hard
to push in and rotate. If this is what you suspect get
an experienced person to help.

Edison screw

Edison Screw (ES) Base Globe Removal

1 - push in softly

If it does not push in, start rotating
2 - Screw anti-clockwise
3 - lift out

To put in a new globe,
push in gently and rotate clockwise
until it will no longer rotate.

WARNING: Globes with Edison Screw bases may sometimes have poor contacts and will not light.
Try rotating a little further so there is positive contact
with the bottom contact.

New energy efficient light globes - a few useful ideas!

1.
Check the globe base type - Bayonet base (BA) or Edison Screw (ES)
2.
What colour do you want?  Natural (blue-ish) or Warm (more like a standard globe)
3.
What shape to fit existing light fittings?  There are both curly short and longer sizes
4.
How many watts?
As a rule-of-thumb, new globes use only 1/5th or 20% of the power
of a standard globe, for the same amount of light. See table below.

Energy saving light globes

These globes usually cost more to buy but last longer.

Replacing a 100 watt globe with a 20 watt energy saver &
using the globe 5 hours per night, saves around $20 per year
in electricity costs in Australia, plus 280 tonnes of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas if generated from coal.

(Gas is better - there is only an extra 84 tonnes
of COif a standard 100 watt globe is used.)
