Make family time
a top priority
The stress of juggling work and children
can cause enormous fallout
for your relationships and health.

Look for the danger signs:

Working long
unsocial hours

Spending less quality time
with families and friends

People who are so involved are likely to
have strained relationships and parenting
marked by anger and inconsistency.

One of the chief culprits is changes to work culture.
Thirty years ago an average Australian worker
spent less than 40 hours at work which allowed
plenty of time to relax all weekend.

But globalisation-downscaling and the
techno revolution involving laptops, emails
and the 'whole 9 yards' have increased work
demands.

What to do to maximise quality family time:

Give the TV a rest

and play a board game with the family

Get involved

Plan and plant a family garden,
and do the weeding, watering & watching it grow!
(Growing fruit can be nice)

Create memories

Go search out the photo albums
tell the stories, laugh at the changing fashions ...
and build up the family memories.
(Edit the pics into a DVD for all to share)

Share meals together

Not to be forgotten is eating together
starting with setting the table, tossing the salad
and chatting about your day.
(Allow EVERYONE to have their say about their day)

Make & stick to commitments

Commitment to your family is another path
such as exercising together or helping with coaching
in a sport where your children take part.

A family holiday together

Simple excursions, time away from distractions,
camping and a special event
can build stronger relationships.

(It may require planning on one leave break
for a future time offsite.)

An exploring picnic
in a DIFFERENT park can be good
or maybe an 'escapade' watching the dolphins.

You know it's time to seek a better pathway when:

We are suffering from tiredness, anxiety and depression
and then get angry and withdrawn.
Not surpisingly, relationships with our partners and children are suffering.
Children are showing signs of hyperactivity, plus inattention
and other emotional disorders.

Our materialistic lifestyle puts enormous pressure on couples
who don't stop to assess whether they could actually be happier with a smaller house and less possessions.
Yet in order to buy the plasma TV, new car or X box and keep up with rising interest rates we're becoming slaves to work.
