| Self abuse - deliberate self injury (DSI) | ||||
| Back | ||||
| Why? | People injure themselves to get relief from distress, anxiety, disappointment, despair, suicide feelings, not feeling alive, relationship issues, feeling angry or intense pain. Every situation is unique. (For some, a tattoo can be a form of mild DSI ) |
| Helpful steps | Have a couple of friends that you can call to distract you when you have such thoughts. Make a list of at least 10 things you can do instead of hurting yourself. Have a sanctuary or safe place to go to where you cannot hurt yourself. (This may be in your home, at the beach or a garden). Recognise that it is OK to have worries which might mean sometimes feeling scared, frustrated or uncomfortable. Make the decision to want to stop hurting yourself. |

The Australian website on DSI (deliberate self injury) is a good start. Other related titles SIV (self injury violence) aim to help people express their inner pain. Pilbara Link-Up Program has an Australian Indigenous perspective. |
