Cravings can be significantly reduced by new medications, amino acids and other holistic approaches such as meditation. Because psychological illnesses and traumas often underlie addiction, treatment by mental health practitioners can be an important part of the process. Support systems like 12 step programs are critical for most.

Other useful stuff .... on nicotine

Home

While the number people addicted to nicotine has declined significantly over the last ten years according to the Australian Institute of Health and welfare, tobacco is still the largest single preventable cause of death in Australia, causing 16,000 deaths every year. Cigarettes are responsible
for 80% of all lung cancer deaths and 20% of all cancer deaths.

Another important part of the process of stopping to smoke is focussing
on what you are gaining... rather on what you are giving up.

Reasons people find for giving up smoking include saving money,
feeling fitter, breathing easier, and being free of that morning cough.

One of the aids available to smokers wanting to quit is nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches or gum.which can double someone's chances of quitting.

Another option is Zyban a prescription medication.

These therapies only address the chemical or physical addiction to nicotine. You still need to develop strategies to change your habits and learn to cope with emotions such as stress.
