Physical abuse

Abuses   Physical Abuse
  Back

Domestic violence victims more likely to be women
than men. (The ratio is five to eight times)

Abuse is not your fault!
No one deserves this treatment

What are the signs? Bruises over different parts of the body,
and cuts over the skin apparently from an "accident".

Depression, absences from work,
not meeting up with friends or family,
fear of partner and/or isolation.

Unexplained serious injury to pets

What can I do?

Take all threats seriously and try not to antagonise the situation.

Develop a safety plan
that specifies who will be with you
when you need companionship and protection.
(If you're abused in front of witnesses,
get them to write down what they saw.)

Have important items in a safe place if you have to leave urgently
(This included documents, money, medication,
medicare cards, credit cards and a key to your home)

Know where to go where you will be safe.

Contact the police if your abuser has broken a law,
or even if you just think they might have broken a law.
Assaulting you or stealing or destroying your property is a crime.

Contact a domestic violence hotline
to plan for your safe future.
Advise can include ways to protect yourself,
refer you to other services and shelters,
and inform you about local laws and restraining orders.

Memorise emergency phone numbers.

WARNING A restraining order has no force behind it.
It is just a piece of paper.
The police can enforce the order only
if someone violates it, and then only if
someone reports the violation.

This means that you must be endangered
in some way for the police to step in!

If you are the victim of stalking or abuse,
you need to carefully research how restraining orders
or protection orders are enforced in your neighborhood.
Find out if the violator will just be given a warning
or if they will actually be taken to jail.

If the police simply talk to the violator,
the abuser may reason that the police will do nothing
and feel empowered to pursue you further.
Or the abuser may become angry and retaliate.
